The Greenville County Bar Association has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s, when local attorneys gathered not only to advance the practice of law, but to build a professional community grounded in collegiality and mutual respect. By the 1960s, attorneys regularly met at roster meetings, fostering the strong working relationships that continue to define the Bar today.
As Greenville’s legal community expanded in the 1970s, the Association evolved alongside it, forming an Executive Committee dedicated to promoting professionalism and supporting the growing practice of law in Greenville County. The 1980s marked an important milestone with the hiring of the Bar’s first executive secretary, Connie Regan, whose 11 years of service helped establish the administrative foundation of the organization.
In the early 1990s, the Association formally organized as a 501(c)(6) corporation and welcomed its second executive secretary, Nancy Griffeth, who oversaw the daily operations and continued strengthening member services. In 2005, the Bar entered a transformative era under the Executive Coordinator Melinda Davidson, whose 21 years of dedicated leadership guided the Association’s growth, professionalism, and community impact.
In 2026 Lauren P. Smith became Executive Coordinator, continuing the tradition of service while building upon the legacy established by those who came before.
Today, the Association remains a member-driven organization led by annually elected officers—President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer—along with numerous committee chairs who generously volunteer their time and talents. Together, they carry forward more than a century of leadership, service, and community within Greenville’s legal profession.
The primary purpose of the Greenville County Bar Association is to promote the common business and professional interests of lawyers practicing in Greenville County.
The Greenville County Bar Association (GCBA) offers a wide range of programs designed to support professional excellence, strengthen collegiality, and promote public confidence in the legal profession.
G-Bar News, the Association’s official newsletter, keeps members informed about upcoming events, member achievements, community initiatives, and developments within the local legal community.
Each May, the GCBA proudly sponsors Law Week, providing meaningful opportunities for community service, outreach, and fellowship—all aimed at strengthening the public’s understanding of and trust in the legal profession.
Professional development remains a cornerstone of the Association’s mission. Each February, the GCBA hosts a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminar, giving Upstate attorneys the opportunity to stay current on emerging legal issues while earning valuable CLE credits.
Throughout the year, the Bar brings members together through a dynamic calendar of events, including four to five social gatherings such as Family Night at the Zoo, the Judges’ Reception, and the Holiday Party. These events create relaxed, social settings where attorneys can build relationships beyond the courtroom. The Association also hosts several luncheons annually featuring speakers addressing timely legal and community topics.
Membership dues are $100 annually. While individual programs and social events are priced to cover costs, many are significantly subsidized by the Association to encourage broad participation. Today, the GCBA proudly serves more than 1,400 members. Membership is voluntary and open to attorneys licensed to practice in South Carolina, as well as attorneys licensed in other states who practice in Greenville County.
In 2015, the Association commissioned local historian Dr. Judith Bainbridge to author a book chronicling the history of Greenville’s legal community, preserving the stories and legacy of the profession for future generations. More information about this publication is available HERE.
