Welcome Remarks

+ Lance Crick


Lance Crick is the Supervisory Assistant United States Attorney for the Greenville USAO. Since joining the United States Attorney’s Office in August 2001, Lance has advanced the prosecution of Project CeaseFire cases, the South Carolina component of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). As the state-wide coordinator for PSN/Ceasefire, Lance’s responsibilities include working with local, state, and federal authorities in order to target violent felons who continue to possess and use firearms as well as coordinating education and outreach efforts with community partners and schools on gun safety. Lance also handles OCDETF (Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force) drug prosecutions, cases which focus on the activities of drug trafficking operations which span multiple jurisdictions.

Prior to joining the United States Attorney’s Office, Lance worked for three years as a state prosecutor in the 13th Judicial Circuit, handling a variety of violent crime and narcotics cases, in Pickens County, South Carolina. Lance received his undergraduate degree from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1995 and his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1998.

Lance and his wife, Cindy, a former state prosecutor in the Seventh Judicial Circuit, who currently serves as Chief of Staff for Congressman Trey Gowdy, live in Greenville with their seven-year-old son, Smith.

+ Bill Wilson


Bill represents both plaintiffs and defendants in civil litigation matters with an emphasis on commercial, real estate, and construction litigation. He has experience in cases involving construction, trucking, products liability, breach of contract, antitrust, defamation, negligence, personal injury, Fair Credit Reporting Act, environmental, copyright, banking, creditor rights, ERISA, telecommunications, insurance coverage, wage payment, and foreclosure and has tried numerous cases to verdict. Bill views the practice of law as a high calling and is committed to its traditional standards of honor, integrity, and justice. Bill also is devoted to his wife and family and strives to play with his four young children on a daily basis. In those rare moments of free time, Bill enjoys the guitar, movies, and ultimate frisbee.

+ The Honorable John Kittredge


John Kittredge was born and raised in Greenville County. John graduated from the University of South Carolina, summa cum laude. He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Academic honors include Phi Beta Kappa, Order of the Coif, and Wig and Robe. John is the first person ever to serve on all South Carolina courts, which include the family court, circuit court, court of appeals, and currently the supreme court. John is in his twenty-sixth year as a member of the South Carolina judiciary.

Anne S. Ellefson is Deputy General Counsel for Academics and Community Affairs for the Greenville Health System. She is Immediate Past President of the South Carolina Bar and Immediate Past President of ETV Endowment of SC. She currently serves on numerous boards, including Southern First Bank, Greenville Local Development Corporation, SC TAC, Hollingsworth Funds and Verdae Development, Inc. Prior activity in the community includes service as Chair of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Board Chair and Campaign Chair of the United Way of Greenville County, as well as board service on many boards. She received the Lifetime of Charitable Giving Award in 2015 from the Community Foundation of Greenville and received the Chamber’s Athena Award in 2016.

+ Kirby Mitchell


Kirby Mitchell is a senior litigation attorney at South Carolina Legal Services. A graduate of Furman University and University of Georgia School of Law, he is a member of the South Carolina Bar in which he serves in the House of Delegates, State Bar of Georgia, and is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court and U.S. Tax Court. Representing low-income clients in a wide variety of civil cases, Kirby appears in federal and state courts—including family, probate, circuit, magistrate and appellate courts. He teaches a popular “Poverty and the Law” class at Furman (2011-2016), most recently focusing the class on medical-legal partnerships (MLP), and he has presented and co-presented to lawyers and Bar members -- in South Carolina as well as nationally – many times, including at The Riley Institute, the National Legal Aid and Defender Association (“Representing Individuals and Families Struggling with Autism Spectral Disorders”) and the South Carolina Judiciary (“Turner v. Rogers and the Role of the Family Court Judge”).

Kirby has received the Furman Heritage Alumni Award (2009), the S.C. Bar and Access to Justice Commission’s Legal Services Lawyer of the Year Award (2013), and in 2016, he was selected as the only “legal aid” lawyer in the United States to by invited to the 44th Annual Trial Academy of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) at Stanford Law School in Palo Alto, CA.

+ Stinson Ferguson


Stinson Woodward Ferguson currently serves as Treasurer and Apprentice Funeral Director at the J.W. Woodward Funeral Home, Inc. in Spartanburg. Prior to her leadership at the Funeral Home, Ms. Ferguson worked as an attorney at Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A. Prior to joining Haynsworth, Ms. Ferguson clerked for the Honorable Kristi L. Harrington, South Carolina Circuit Court, Ninth Judicial Circuit. She also worked at the S.C. Environmental Law Project in Pawleys Island as part of a fellowship program. Ms. Ferguson has developed and presented seminars and continuing legal education courses on topics including End of Life Issues, Strategies for Legal Research, Law and Philosophy, Post-Trial Motions, and civic leadership for the professional woman for local and national organizations. She currently serves the SC Bar as a 13th Judicial Circuit Representative in the SC House of Delegates.

Chris is a litigation associate at Wyche, P.A., where his practice is focused on First Amendment media defense, intellectual property disputes, False Claims Act cases, and a range of other complex litigation including shareholder oppression and antitrust litigation. He enjoys trial work and has tried a number of criminal matters on a pro bono basis. He is also interested in technology and issues related to digital evidence.

Chris is a graduate of Furman University and the University of Virginia School of Law and has served as a law clerk for the Honorable C. Weston Houck and the Honorable Bruce H. Hendricks, both of the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina.

Chris serves on the Board of the Federal Bar Association and the Executive Committee of the Greenville Bar Association.

Perspectives from the Bench: Ethical Considerations

+ The Honorable Tim Cain


Judge Timothy M. Cain was born and raised in Oconee County, attended the public schools, and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1983. He earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1986.

He served as an Assistant Public Defender for Oconee County, and, thereafter, as an Assistant Solicitor for the Tenth Judicial Circuit prosecuting cases in Anderson and Oconee Counties. While in private practice, he engaged in the general practice of law and served as County Attorney for Oconee County and its various boards and commissions from 1992 until 2000. He also represented several municipalities and public service districts during this time. In 2000, he was elected by the South Carolina General Assembly to serve as Family Court Judge for the Tenth Judicial Circuit. During his tenure in this position, Judge Cain conducted trials in seventeen counties throughout the state. He also served, by designation of the Chief Justice, as an Acting Associate Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court on several occasions.

On February 16, 2011, Judge Cain was nominated by the President to serve as a United States District Judge. He was confirmed by the Senate on September 20, 2011 and commissioned on September 26, 2011.

Judge Cain is married to the former Renee Patterson. Judge and Mrs. Cain have one son, Martin, a junior at the University of South Carolina.

Judge Cain’s office is located in the G. Ross Anderson, Jr. Federal Building and United States Courthouse in Anderson, South Carolina.

+ The Honorable Kevin McDonald


Judge McDonald serves in Greenville as a United States Magistrate Judge for the District of South Carolina. Prior to his appointment to the bench in June 2010, he worked at the United States Attorney's Office for ten years, with the last six years as a supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney, including two terms in 2008 and 2010 when he was appointed by the Department of Justice to serve as the Acting United States Attorney for South Carolina. Before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, he was in private practice in Columbia for seven years, handling a variety of cases that included banking and insurance litigation, workers compensation, real estate, and federal criminal defense. He holds a journalism degree from the University of South Carolina, and a law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.

+ The Honorable Ned Miller


Judge Miller was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 24, 1952. He gratuated high school from Spartanburg Day School in 1970 and college with a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University in 1974. Judge Miller completed Law School at the University of South Carolina in 1978. He worked for the Southern Bank and Trust Company from 1978 – 1980, the Greenville County Public Defender Office from 1980 – 1981, and Miller and Paschal from 1981 - 2000. Since 2000, he has served on the SC Circuit Court.

A senior healthcare and non-profit executive and director since 2002, Richard has experience across multiple domains, including mental health services, substance use disorder treatment, and recovery support services. He has led various human service programs and directed administrative functions in a variety of behavioral healthcare settings ranging from inpatient drug and alcohol services to community based mental health programs. Richard is a Certified Addiction Counselor, Certified Clinical Supervisor, CoOccurring Disorder Professional, NAADAC DOT Substance Abuse Professional, Certified ARISE Interventionist and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist. Richard is an adjunct faculty member in Sociology at Greenville Technical College and has also been adjunct faculty in several other college/university settings. Paul Wickensimer is the Clerk of Court for Greenville County. Prior to holding this position, he served 15 ½ years on Greenville County Council and was the former Council Chairman. He was also associated with BellSouth Corporation for 26 ½ years. There he worked in customer services, marketing, training, management, and community relations. Since becoming Clerk of Court on July 1, 2000, Paul has been involved in numerous government and community organizations as well as church boards and committees.

Jason Bobertz is the Deputy Clerk of Court for the Supreme Court of South Carolina. Among other responsibilities, Mr. Bobertz has been involved in assisting the Judicial Department in implementing the E-Filing Pilot Program.

Mr. Bobertz has served as a Staff Attorney with the Supreme Court and as a law clerk to the Honorable John H. + The Honorable Karl Allen


Senator Allen has practiced law in excess of thirty (30) plus years in downtown Greenville. His practice is General with emphasis in Personal Injury, Criminal Defense and Domestic Relations. He enjoys litigation whether it is a Death Penalty, Slip and Fall or § 1983 Civil rights violation.

Scott Talley has been in private practice in Spartanburg since 2002. During this time, he's assisted clients with legal matters throughout the United States. In addition to his work on behalf of numerous corporate and individual clients, Scott has served as local counsel to national law firms on class action matters pending in the state of South Carolina. Scott resides with his wife and three sons in Moore, S.C.

+ The Honorable William Timmons


William Timmons is an attorney and entrepreneur living in Greenville. He is the State Senator for District 06 in South Carolina. In four years with the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s office, he prosecuted crimes including murder, white-collar crime and domestic violence. Timmons owns multiple small businesses: Swamp Rabbit CrossFit, Timmons & Company, LLC, and Soul Yoga. A native of Greenville, Timmons attended George Washington University, where he earned a degree in International Affairs and Political Science, and the University of South Carolina, completing his law degree and at the same time, earning a Masters in International Studies

+ Van Cato


Van Cato has worked for Lundsey Graham since January 1995, first during his service as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from South Carolina's Third Congressional District and later as United States Senator from South Carolina. During Van's career he has held a variety of titles in Senator Graham's office, starting as a constituent liason, before being promoted to Upstate Director, and later, State Director. As State Director, he is responsible for the day to day operations of six regional office and the state staff.

Van is a 1992 graduate of Presbyterian College. He is married to the gormer Lisa Ouzts and they have three daughters.

+ Cindy Crick


Cindy Crick graduated from Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia with a BA degree in Biology in 1994. She attended the University of South Carolina School of Law and graduated with a J.D. in 2002.

Cindy is currently the Chief of Staff for Congressman Trey Gowdy, who represents the 4th Congressional District of South Carolina. She began working for the House of Representatives in 2010 when Mr. Gowdy was elected to the US Congress. She helps develop and implement policy objectives, strategies and operating plans for the Member's offices, manages and directs all activities and staff in the Member's Washington D.C. and district offices, and helps coordinate and staff the activities of the Congressman Gowdy while he is in the district.

Prior to becoming Congressman Gowdy’s Chief of Staff, Cindy served eight years as an Assistant Solicitor in the 7th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. While there, she coordinated and supervised the Violence Against Women Unit. She prosecuted cases involving violence against women including criminal domestic violence, arson, burglary, sexual assaults, domestic homicides, and a death penalty case.

Cindy also facilitated prosecution of magistrate level cases in both Spartanburg and Cherokee County centralized CDV courts. She provided training to law enforcement, judges, medical providers, and community agencies including Family Violence Conference training, Solicitor’s Conference victim advocate training, and Safe Homes Rape Crisis Coalition annual volunteer training.

Cindy is married to Lance Crick who is an Assistant U.S. Attorney. They have a 7-year-old son named Smith, and are also parents to a sweet pug named Pearl.

Benjamin M. Renfrow is a workers’ compensation defense attorney in the Greenville, South Carolina office of Willson Jones Carter & Baxley. He received his B.A. degree from Wofford College, where he lettered in baseball for four years and his J.D. degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law where he was a member of the Moot Court Bar.

Mr. Renfrow was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 2004 and is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association and the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Educational Association. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the South Carolina Workers' Compensation Educational Association, a member of the Greenville Little League Board of Directors and is a former member of the Wofford College Terrier Club Board of Directors. Ben was born and raised in Dillon, South Carolina and moved to Greenville in 2006 with his wife Dr. Jocelyn Renfrow and son Brayden. + Walt Wilkins


Walt Wilkins was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina. In 1996 he graduated from Wofford College and received his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999. Walt began his professional career as an attorney with Lockheed Martin Aircraft in Argentina, and in 2000 he joined the Greenville law firm of Leatherwood, Walker, Todd and Mann. He also served as an adjunct professor at Greenville Technical College. In 2003 he was selected Young Lawyer of the Year by the American Board of Trial Advocates. In 2005 Walt was appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Greenville Office. While there he handled several noteworthy cases including one of the largest mortgage fraud cases in the district, a large scale gambling operation which resulted in one of the largest forfeiture cases in the Upstate, and a high profile human trafficking case. In 2006 Walt received the United States Secret Service Award for Outstanding Prosecution and the United States Attorney's award for Outstanding Prosecutor. In 2007 he was recognized for Outstanding Contribution to the Asset Forfeiture Program. On May 7, 2008 President George W. Bush appointed Walt the United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina, and he was subsequently confirmed by the US Senate. As the forty-ninth United States Attorney for South Carolina, Walt served as the chief federal prosecutor for the state of South Carolina and chairman of the District's Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee. When he became US Attorney, Walt's main prosecution priorities were violent crimes, gangs and white collar crime. Through his cooperation with state and local law enforcement agencies some of the most serious and violent gangs operating in the state were dismantled. In November, 2010 Walt was elected Solicitor of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit and was sworn in for a four year term beginning on January 12, 2011. After his election Walt was appointed to serve on the Commission on Prosecution Coordination by Governor Nikki Haley. In March 2011 he established a Worthless Check Program for Greenville and Pickens that helps local businesses by collecting money on bad checks and transferring the funds to the victim. Walt also established a Sex Crime Prosecution Unit within his office to target and effectively prosecute sex crimes, particularly those against children. He also expanded the Juvenile Arbitration Program to include Greenville County.

Walt is married to the former Donyelle Burton and they are the parents of three children.

Frank Eppes was born in Greenville and attended Travelers Rest High School, Washington & Lee, and the University of South Carolina Law School. He has practiced law at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and Eppes & Plumblee, PA. For the last 20 years his practice has concentrated mainly in the areas of criminal defense and business litigation.

+ Lance Crick


Lance Crick is the Supervisory Assistant United States Attorney for the Greenville USAO. Since joining the United States Attorney’s Office in August 2001, Lance has advanced the prosecution of Project CeaseFire cases, the South Carolina component of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). As the state-wide coordinator for PSN/Ceasefire, Lance’s responsibilities include working with local, state, and federal authorities in order to target violent felons who continue to possess and use firearms as well as coordinating education and outreach efforts with community partners and schools on gun safety. Lance also handles OCDETF (Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force) drug prosecutions, cases which focus on the activities of drug trafficking operations which span multiple jurisdictions.

Prior to joining the United States Attorney’s Office, Lance worked for three years as a state prosecutor in the 13th Judicial Circuit, handling a variety of violent crime and narcotics cases, in Pickens County, South Carolina. Lance received his undergraduate degree from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1995 and his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1998.

Lance and his wife, Cindy, a former state prosecutor in the Seventh Judicial Circuit, who currently serves as Chief of Staff for Congressman Trey Gowdy, live in Greenville with their seven-year-old son, Smith.

+ Ben Stepp


BENJAMIN T. STEPP is an assistant federal public defender for the District of South Carolina. He is the office manager for the Greenville branch office. He received his B.A. degree in Economics from Clemson University in 1974. He received his J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of South Carolina in 1977. He was admitted to practice in South Carolina in 1978. He was admitted to the bars of the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina in 1979 and of the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 1984. He was an assistant solicitor in the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Pickens from 1979 to 1983 and deputy solicitor from 1983 to 1989. From 1989 to 1990 he was in private practice in Pickens with Acker, Acker, Floyd, and Welmaker, P.A. He returned to the Solicitor’s Office as deputy solicitor from 1990 to 1991. At the end of 1991 he left prosecution and began in 1992 as an assistant federal public defender in Greenville.

Municipal Court:  Practice Tips and Update

+ The Honorable Matthew R. Hawley, Jr.

Matt Hawley is currently Judge of the Municipal Court for the City of Greenville. He is a Greenville native and graduate of Greenville County Schools and the University of South Carolina. Upon graduation from the University of South Carolina, School of Law in 1977, Matt returned to Greenville to begin his legal career as an Assistant Solicitor in the Thirteenth Circuit under the leadership of Billy Wilkins. In 1980, Matt left the Solicitor’s Office to enter private practice with retired Judge John T. Gentry of Pickens, South Carolina; but, in November 1983, he was persuaded to return to public service by then Solicitor Bill Traxler, where he served as Deputy Solicitor under Solicitor Joe Watson until June, 1990.

At that time Matt was appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina upon the recommendation of Senator Strom Thurmond. He initially served in the Criminal Division and later was named coordinator of the Greenville office of the Presidential Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force. Solicitor Watson called upon Matt to return to the Solicitor’s Office in June, 1993, where he remained until he was elected Municipal Judge by the Greenville City Council in September, 1996. Matt lives in Greenville’s Augusta Road area with his wife, Susan.

Their daughter, Beth, and son-in-law Major Charles Dixon, USAR, are Wofford College graduates stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas with granddaughter Emmy. Daughter, Meredith, is a graduate of Furman University and son-in-law Dr. Steve Pysnik live and work in Durham, North Carolina. The Hawleys attend Trinity United Methodist Church in Greenville where Matt is active as a Sunday school teacher and member of various Boards and Commissions. His community activities have included the Greenville Family Partnership Board, the Downtown Rotary Club, and former membership on the Greenville County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, where he served as its Treasurer and Chairman.

+ The Honorable Letitia Verdin


Judge Verdin graduated from Furman University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and received her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina in 1997. While in law school, she was a member of the National Moot Court team and was named the outstanding student volunteer at the University of South Carolina.

After graduation from law school, she became an Assistant Solicitor with the Office of the 13th Circuit Solicitor, and later, the Office of the 8th Circuit Solicitor. It was during this time that she headed the Family Court unit for juvenile prosecution in both circuits. In 2000, she accepted a position as an Associate Attorney with the firm of Clarkson, Walsh, Rheney, & Turner, P.A. in Greenville, SC, practicing in the areas of governmental and general civil liability defense, criminal defense, and family law. In 2005, she returned to the Office of the 13th Circuit Solicitor where she prosecuted cases in the areas of child abuse and neglect and domestic violence.

Judge Verdin was elected to the Family Court as a resident judge in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit in 2008. In 2011, the South Carolina Legislature elected her to the Circuit Court, Seat 2, Thirteenth Judicial Circuit.

+ Andrew B. Moorman, Sr.


Andy graduated cum laude from Furman University in 1998 and from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2001. While in law school, Andy served as a member of the South Carolina Law Review and was the recipient of the CALI award for Legal and Equitable Remedies.

Upon graduating from law school, Andy served as law clerk for the Honorable John C. Few, Resident Circuit Judge, 13th Judicial Circuit (currently Chief Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals), where he worked from 2001- 2002. In 2002, he joined the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office as an assistant solicitor. While at the Solicitor’s Office, Andy was assigned to the general unit where he prosecuted violent felonies, drug crimes, and property crimes. He also headed the office’s appellate division and represented the State of South Carolina in the case of Ex Parte Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc., 369 S.C. 69, 631 S.E.2d 86 (2006).

In 2007, Bannister & Wyatt, LLC, hired Andy as an associate. His practice focused on criminal defense, domestic relations, and civil litigation. In August 2009, Andy was hired as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina. He works in the Greenville office and is assigned to the drug unit. During his tenure at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Andy has prosecuted and tried multi-defendant drug cases, has represented the United States in numerous appeals before the Fourth Circuit, and has managed numerous court- authorized wiretaps. Andy has participated in numerous Continuing Legal Education presentations for fellow prosecutors and lawyers in numerous practice areas.

+ The Honorable Tarita Dunbar


Judge Tarita A. (Ridgill) Dunbar was born in Manning, South Carolina and raised in Summerton, South Carolina. She is the daughter of Roland Hayes and Clotel Ragin Richburg and the late William Nelson Ridgill. She is a graduate of Manning High School, Georgetown University and the University Of South Carolina School Of Law.

After law school, Tarita started her legal career in private practice in Columbia, South Carolina practicing in the area of domestic relations. Shortly thereafter, Tarita served as the Director of Research and Legal Counsel for the South Carolina Senate Committee on Corrections and Penology. Her legal career also includes serving as an Attorney for the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation; Attorney for Spartanburg and Cherokee County Department of Social Services; and Attorney for South Carolina Department of Social Services Child Support Division.

Tarita was appointed to serve as a Commissioner to the South Carolina Human Affairs Board of Commissioner. She also served on the Board of Eau Claire Cooperative Health Centers, Inc., Columbia, South Carolina.

Tarita is a member of Augusta Road Church of Christ, Greenville, South Carolina, where she has served as Sunday School Teacher. She is married to Vernon F. Dunbar and they have three children, William Radford Dunbar, Kathleen Eleanor Dunbar, and Richard Hayes Dunbar.

She enjoys exercising at the Caine Halter YMCA, reading, and hiking. Tarita is passionate about other’s health in terms of eating properly and using nature’s remedies for healing.

+ Hannah Metcalfe Rogers


Hannah Rogers Metcalfe is in private practice with the law firm of Metcalfe & Atkinson, LLC, which she co-founded in 2011 with her partner, Courtney Atkinson, past president of the Greenville Bar. Ms. Metcalfe’s litigation practice includes civil litigation on behalf of plaintiffs and defendants, business litigation, family law, federal criminal defense, media and first amendment, and appellate law.

Ms. Metcalfe received her Bachelor of Science of Foreign Service degree from Georgetown University in 1999. She received her J.D. from Columbia University School of Law in 2002, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, President of the Student Senate, and a member of the Columbia Law Review. After law school, she clerked in Philadelphia for the Honorable Anita B. Brody of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She went on to clerk for The Honorable William B. Traxler, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. After toiling in the salt mines of a larger firm (Wyche) for several years, Ms. Metcalfe embarked on her current small-firm adventure in 2011.

Ms. Metcalfe is admitted to practice in New York and South Carolina, as well as in the Eastern District of New York, the District of South Carolina, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeals for the Armed Services. A past president of the South Carolina Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, Ms. Metcalfe now serves as the elected Circuit Vice-President for the Fourth Circuit for the Federal Bar Association and is a member of the board of the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association. A member of the Haynsworth Perry Inn of Court, Ms. Metcalfe serves as the Chair of the Fourth Circuit Rules Advisory Committee.

Hannah is also the mother of two beautiful children, Marshall and Riley, and is married to Logan, an entrepreneurial Kiwi who is the founder of Arkiver, a technology startup that provides families and businesses a way to digitally collect and curate life’s memories. In her spare time, Hannah likes to get out of town and return to her roots in the Dark Corner.

+ Alex Stalvey


Alex Stalvey currently serves as a managing partner for Bannister, Wyatt & Stalvey, LLC in Greenville, South Carolina. Alex grew up in Columbia, South Carolina graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1999. Alex then moved to Washington, D.C. and served on the staff of Senator Strom Thurmond as a projects assistant until the fall of 2001. Alex attended the USC School of Law from 2001 to 2004.

Alex began his career as a law clerk to Circuit Judge John L. Breeden Georgetown and Horry Counties. He then moved to the upstate serving as an Assistant Solicitor in Spartanburg and Greenville counties until 2009 when he joined his current firm.

Alex’s current practice involves Criminal Defense, Divorce and Personal Injury.
In 2010, Alex was elected by members of the Greenville County Bar to serve as circuit representative on the Board of the S.C. Association for Justice. The following year, he was nominated to represent the Thirteenth Circuit on the Board of the S.C. Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

In 2014, Alex achieved Criminal Trial Advocacy Certification from the NBTA based on his extensive jury trial experience as a prosecutor and defense attorney. Alex has given past presentations to the Greenville County Bar and S.C. Public Defenders’ Association on self-defense strategies under the “Stand Your Ground” law. He has also served as an instructor in trial advocacy with the S.C. Association of Magistrate and Municipal Judges.

In 2015, Alex’s article on an individual’s constitutional rights under Miranda vs. Arizona was featured in the monthly journal South Carolina Lawyer which is published by the S.C. Bar. In 2016, Alex’s article on expert testimony in criminal sexual conduct cases was featured in the Justice Bulletin, a monthly publication provided to members of the South Carolina Association for Criminal Justice.

Nuts and Bolts of a Family Court Practice from the Old and the Young

 

+ The Honorable Katherine Tiffany


Judge Tiffany was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1970, to Stuart and Kay Hall. She was raised in Gaffney, South Carolina with her fraternal twin sister (Eleanor Caroline). While attending Spartanburg Day School, she spent most of her free time with horses, competing in horse shows and participating in fox hunts in Tryon, North Carolina.

After graduating from Spartanburg Day School in 1988, Judge Tiffany attended the University of South Carolina Honors College, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. She graduated in 1992 Magna Cum Laude with a Major in English and a minor in South Carolina Studies, and then attended the University of South Carolina School of Law, graduating in 1995 and becoming the fourth generation in her family to enter the practice of law.

From 1995 to 1996, she clerked for the Honorable Henry Floyd, then Circuit Judge for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit. In 1996 she joined Carter, Smith, Merriam, Rogers & Traxler, P.A. as an Associate, and then became partner in 2006. During her twenty years of private practice, she focused almost exclusively on family court with an emphasis on custody, support and complex issues both in her practice and as presenter at numerous continuing legal education seminars. From 2009 to 2016 she served as a member of the South Carolina Bar Family Law Council, serving as Co Course Planner for the Family Law Intensive CLE in 2011 and 2013, and as Secretary, Vice Chair and Chair Elect.

In 1995, Judge Tiffany married Peter Clifford Tiffany, a native of Aiken, South Carolina who works as a Certified Public Accountant. She and her husband have two sons, Brice Baskin and Barron Joseph; a dog, Grace and a cat, Banjo. They are members of St. James Episcopal Church, where Judge Tiffany has served as a nursery volunteer and Children’s Church leader. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family, reading a wide variety of books, watching old movies, and trying to stay active.

On May 25, 2016 Judge Tiffany was elected to succeed the late Honorable Harry L. Phillips as Judge of the Family Court, Thirteenth Judicial Circuit

+ Tom Traxler


Thomas W. Traxler is a partner with Carter, Smith, Merriam, Rogers & Traxler, P.A. in Greenville, SC. He graduated from Davidson College in 1974 with a B.A. in German, and the University of South Carolina Law School in June, 1979. He has been admitted to practice law in South Carolina since November 8, 1979, and practiced in Greenville County, South Carolina, since that time.

He is a member of the South Carolina Association for Justice (formerly South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association), a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, a member of the South Carolina Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), and a member (Masters category) of Haynsworth-Perry Inn of Court. He served on the South Carolina Judicial Council from 2012 to 2016. + Tim Madden


Tim Madden is the managing partner of the Greenville office of South Carolina-based firm Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough, LLP (www.nelsonmullins.com). He practices statewide. Tim's family law practice is focused on contested financial litigation. He also maintains an extensive general litigation and appellate practice in all courts. 

Tim is a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and previously served on the Board of Governors and as President of the South Carolina Chapter. He serves on the faculty of the Houston Family Law Trial Institute at which he lectures and teaches trial skills and matters related to business valuations in divorce litigation. Tim taught family law in the paralegal program at Greenville Technical College, wrote the chapter on marital dissolution and child custody for the South Carolina Practice Manual (Howard/Moise ed. 2000), served on the editorial board for the treatise Marital Litigation in South Carolina (Stuckey), taught at the orientation program for new family court judges, and speaks at various seminars sponsored by the South Carolina Bar and other organizations. Amie was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina. She is a graduate of the College of Charleston and Thomas Goode Jones School of Law. + Kinli Abee


Kinli Abee has been an Assistant Attorney General for the State of South Carolina since 2013 and currently serves as the managing prosecutor of special victim cases, focusing on child sexual assaults and human trafficking. In October of 2015, she secured the first human trafficking conviction in the history of the state of South Carolina.

Kinli is a 2008 graduate of Wofford College where she graduated with degrees in Government and Philosophy. She attended the Charlotte School of Law where she graduated in 2011 with pro bono honors. While at Charlotte Law, she was the chair of the Pro Bono Custody and Divorce Clinic, a semi-finalist in the National Trial Competition and won the title of “Best Oral Advocate” at the William Daniel National Mock Trial Competition.

Kinli is licensed to practice law in South Carolina and began her career at the Seventh Circuit Solicitor’s Office where she prosecuted general crimes and crimes against children. She is a member of the Young Lawyers Division, the South Carolina Drug Endangered Children’s Task Force, The Silent Tears Task Force, and a recipient of the Palmetto Center for Women Honors in Government and Law Enforcement. In 2016, she was a co-recipient of the title, “Prosecutor of the Year” from the Carolinas Chapter of the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators. In her spare time, she coaches the W.A. Perry Middle School Mock Trial Team and the USC School of Law Mock Trial team with her husband, Matt, taking the team to nationals for the first time in school history.

+ Carrie Fisher Sherard


Carrie Fisher Sherard is an Assistant United States Attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of South Carolina. Carrie joined the criminal division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2008. She is a graduate of Furman University and the University of South Carolina School of Law. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorneys Office, she served as a law clerk for the Honorable Karen J. Williams of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Carrie currently works as the asset forfeiture attorney for the office and she also serves as the human trafficking coordinator and the tribal liaison for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of South Carolina.
